What is an FUT Hair Transplant?

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation), also referred to as the “strip method” is a hair transplant technique in which a strip of skin containing hair follicles is removed from the donor area (typically the back or sides of the scalp).

Unlike FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction), which involves extracting individual follicles, FUT involves making a linear incision in the donor area, which may leave a visible scar once healed. This method is typically recommended for patients needing a large number of grafts in a single session, because it can be more efficient for harvesting a larger quantity of hair follicles at once.

What is The High-Yield Unit Extraction Method®?
Introducing Our HUE and HUE Plus

Our enhanced FUT method, called HUE (High-Yield Unit Extraction®), moves more tissue from the donor area at the back of the head compared to traditional FUT. The HUE Method moves more tissue from the donor area, in the back of the head, than the traditional FUT hair transplant. The way this is achieved is simple. HUE donor sections are longer and wider than the traditional FUT Strip Method.

The HUE method can extract up to 35cm² of donor tissue, yielding 3,000 to 4,000 hair follicles per procedure, with up to 6,000 follicles in some cases. For patients with greater tissue elasticity, HUE+ (High-Yield Unit Extraction Plus®) can be used to extract up to 50cm² of donor tissue, yielding 5,000 to 7,000 hair follicles, and in some cases, up to 9,000.

*Disclaimer: We ALWAYS attempt to obtain the maximum amount of hair for every patient but we are limited by donor area, tissue elasticity, head circumference and hair density which varies patient-to-patient. As a result your hair follicle numbers can vary. Some patients may require multiple procedures to achieve the desired coverage and density. If you have questions about your donor area, hair density, or required number procedures to achieve your goals please contact your Doctor.

FUT vs FUE
Hair Transplants

Both FUE and FUT (HUE & HUE+) techniques are used to extract hair follicles during a transplant procedure. While these two options are both highly-effective, not everyone may be a suitable candidate for either technique. Our doctors at Natural Transplants can help determine the best option for your specific needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

FUT is a highly effective hair restoration technique ideal for patients with sufficient donor hair density and scalp laxity (elasticity) who require large-volume coverage in a single session.

While it is successful across all hair types, it is often preferred for those with curly or coily/kinky hair compared to FUE, as the strip method allows for the removal and dissection of follicles outside the body under high magnification, which can help preserve the integrity of the curved follicular units.

A hair doctor should conduct a thorough assessment of your specific donor density and scalp elasticity to determine if FUT is the optimal approach for your hair restoration goals.

Standard FUT can typically transplant up to 3,000–4,000 grafts/follicles in a single session, depending on donor availability and patient goals.

For patients with excellent donor characteristics, specialized techniques like High-Yield Unit Extraction Plus (HUE+)® can be employed, which can yield significantly larger sessions, often transplanting 5,000 to 7,000 hair follicles, and in some cases, up to 9,000 hair follicles.

Recovery usually takes 7–14 days for the donor area to heal, with most patients resuming normal activities within a week. Suture removals for FUT are done between day 12-14 from procedure day, which can be done at your primary doctor or at a nearby urgent care center. Full results appear gradually over 9–12 months.

FUT leaves a thin, horizontal scar at the donor site, usually just above the neck, which can be easily concealed by surrounding hair. At Natural Transplants, our surgeons carefully design the incision to minimize its visibility.

The procedure itself is performed under local anesthesia, which makes the surgery painless. However, the initial local anesthesia injections into the scalp are typically reported as the most painful part of the entire process, often described as a brief, intense stinging or pinprick sensation that quickly fades as the numbing agent takes effect.

Due to the nature of the technique, which involves removing a strip of scalp, there is typically more post-op discomfort and soreness along the incision line. Mild to moderate soreness in the donor and recipient areas may last a few days post-op, and some patients also experience temporary tightness or numbness along the incision. This post-operative discomfort is generally manageable with prescribed pain medication.

Transplanted hair is permanent because it comes from genetically resistant donor areas. Normal shedding may occur first, followed by new growth within months to one year.

Hair growth is a gradual process. While some patients may notice initial activity, hair starts to grow visibly around 3–4 months post-surgery, and most patients begin to see significant, noticeable growth six to nine months after the procedure.

Your 12-month follow-up appointment is around the time many patients see their final results, though some individuals may require additional months to see the full, final density.
